The 16-Week Window: Puppy Socialization Done Right in Central Texas

Between roughly 3 and 16 weeks of age, a puppy's brain decides what's normal in the world. Things introduced calmly during this window get filed as “fine.” Things that never appear get filed, later, as “possibly a threat.” This is why an 8-month-old dog who never left the backyard suddenly barks at wheelchairs, hats, and skateboards.

Socialization is exposure, not interaction

The biggest mistake we see: owners think socialization means the puppy must greet every dog and person. It doesn't. It means the puppy calmly observes the world — kids on bikes at Milburn Park, carts rattling at the Georgetown farmers market, motorcycles on 29 — while good things happen near you. A puppy who watches calmly from a bench is being socialized better than one mobbed at a dog park.

The parvo problem, solved

Parvo is real in Williamson County, and your pup isn't fully protected until the final vaccine round around 16 weeks — the exact end of the window. The solution is not staying home. It's controlled exposure:

  • Carry your puppy through busy places — a puppy in arms at the Square absorbs everything with zero ground contact.
  • Use a wagon or open crate at kids' sports games and patios.
  • Host vaccinated, known adult dogs in your own yard instead of visiting dog parks.
  • Drive-and-watch sessions: park at an HEB entrance and let the puppy observe from the tailgate.

A Central Texas checklist

  • Surfaces: turf, gravel, dock planks, metal grates, wet grass after rare rain.
  • Sounds: thunder tracks at low volume (build before storm season), mowers, cicadas at full August volume, fireworks audio before July 4th.
  • People: hats, beards, uniforms, wheelchairs, toddlers moving unpredictably.
  • Wildlife neutrality: deer are everywhere from Berry Creek to Travisso — start “look and disengage” games early.

When to get help

If your puppy freezes, hides, or panics at ordinary things, don't wait for them to grow out of it — they usually grow into it. Our In-Home Functional Training program (5 sessions) builds this entire checklist into a plan for your actual neighborhood.
